Greg Fox Solo: The Gradual Progression Album Release

Celebrating the release of his second solo album, The Gradual Progression (RVNG), percussionist Greg Fox employs new methods of externalizing his polyrhythmic virtuosity into non-physical realms. The seven pieces of The Gradual Progression activate spiritual states through physical means, Fox’s rigorous inner rhythms the mandalic vessel for unbound expression and arrangement.

A formation with alternating members, Guardian Alien materialises at donaufestival as a duo. Band founder and phenomenal drummer Greg Fox (Liturgy, Zs) and electronica and guitar commissary Alexandra Drewchin (Eartheater) merge into a freecore nucleus. Guardian Alien smelts trance elements, Kraut diddle-daddle, and cosmic noises into tribal hell rides with a tick for improvisation. With his customary precision, Fox releases a steaming rataplan of drums, which is shaped by the echoes of Drewchin’s minnesong voice.

Greg Fox Solo : Pharmakon + Piquet + Barst in Brussels

Pharmakon + Greg Fox (Liturgy) + Piquet + Barst

Mini-festival full of frightening electro-noise and gruesome sounds!

◊ Pharmakon
◊ Greg Fox
◊ Piquet
◊ BARST

Must see!

Greg Fox

HOWIE REEVE
“As inventive and playful as it is richly emotional…his approach to bass is beautifully expressive, melodic and thoughtful, but also takes in flamenco-style flourishes, charging post-punk grooves, choppy, percussive passages and one surprisingly violent bout of chaos.” (Matt Evans, The List)

Colin Stetson

„Sorrow, a reimagining of Gorecki’s 3rd Symphony”

Amerykański multiinstrumentalista Colin Stetson stworzył własną interpretacją III Symfonii „Pieśni żałosnych” Henryka Mikołaja Góreckiego. Premiera płyty odbyła się 8 kwietnia. Pierwszy miejscem w Polsce, w którym wykona ją na żywo, będą Katowice. Koncert „Sorrow, a reimagining of Gorecki’s 3rd Symphony” 18 grudnia 2016 roku w Sali Koncertowej Miasta Ogrodów.

Wirtuoz instrumentów dętych Colin Stetson zaczął karierę w Los Angeles i Nowym Jorku współpracując z takimi postaciami jak Laurie Anderson, Sinead O’Connor, Tom Waits czy Lou Reed. Jego grę słychać na płytach Arcade Fire, The National czy The Chemical Brothers. Zaczynał przede wszystkim jako wirtuoz rogu, jednak równocześnie doskonalił swoją technikę gry na saksofonach i klarnecie. Jako solista zadebiutował płytą „New History Warfare” w 2008 roku.

Colin Stetson należy do niezliczonej rzeczy miłośników III Symfonii H. M. Góreckiego. Zawsze zdeterminowany, by poznać go dokładnie i całkowicie. To zaangażowanie doprowadziło mnie w końcu do potrzeby wykonania III Symfonii – mówi artysta.

Do projektu zaprosił w sumie 12 najwybitniejszych muzyków z kręgów muzyki improwizowanej, rocka i alternatywy, w tym swoją żonę, skrzypaczkę Sarah Neufeld, z którą nagrał zeszłoroczną płytę „Never Were the Way She Was”.

Pierwsze polskie koncertowe wykonanie płyty „Sorrow” 18 grudnia o godz. 20 w sali koncertowej Katowice Miasto Ogrodów (plac Sejmu Śląskiego, dawne Centrum Kultury Katowice).

Sorrow – Symphony of Sorrowful Songs reimagined by Colin Stetson

Colin Stetson is a cult multi-instrumentalist who mostly plays the saxophone and the clarinet. On his record Sorrow, which is a reinterpretation of Henryk Mikołaj Górecki’s Symphony No. 3, he plays three types of saxophone, bass clarinet, and synthesizer. Stenton is well known for his solo works (the New History Warfare trilogy, which has been presented on stages worldwide, including at Polish festivals) and cooperation with many outstanding artists like Lou Reed, Anthony Braxton, Mats Gustafsson, Tom Waits, and Arcade Fire. Górecki’s symphony, also known as the Symphony of Sorrowful Songs, is one of Stetson’s favourite compositions, and he's been fascinated by it since he was a student. Sorrow is an attempt to incorporate Górecki into different musical traditions, enriching the piece by adding elements of metal and minimal and drone music to it. Stetson and his group’s concert will close the Huddersfield festival on 27th November.

COLIN STETSON: SORROW

A reimagining of Górecki’s Symphony No. 3, Symphony of Sorrowful Songs
Copresented with the Walker Art Center

"Music that embraces its undying capacity for uplift, that shakes off distinctions between bathos and pathos, between mawkish and grave, as it blasts upward" – Pitchfork

Henryk Górecki’s iconic 3rd Symphony made a major impact on listeners in the early 90s and was a musical touchstone for virtuosic saxophonist Colin Stetson. Celebrated for the way he “demolishes clichés to unleash fresh, unexpected energies,” (Pitchfork) Stetson takes on the mammoth task of reimagining Górecki’s symphony for an expansive and contemporary sonic palate. Sorrow, Stetson’s imaginative new interpretation of the work, has been lauded as “both traditional and playful, timeless and of the moment,” (PopMatters), and draws on a uniquely constructed ensemble, employing electric guitars, synthesizers, drums and woodwinds to create transformative extensions of the emotional core of the piece.

Please note: Seated tickets for this concert are currently sold out. A limited number of standing room tickets will become available at walkerart.org

Learn more: Read an interview with Colin Stetson and local saxophonist Cole Pulice on the Liquid Music Blog.

Multi-reed player Colin Stetson, a native of Ann Arbor, Michigan, has developed a singular career, straddling indie rock and free jazz. He brings his multiphonic extended techniques to rock and carries an aggressive rock attitude to his improvised music. SORROW, a reimagining of Polish composer Henryk Górecki’s 1977 3rd Symphony was premiered in New York City in April. Based on texts inscribed on the walls of a Gestapo prison cell, Górecki’s composition became an international phenomenon when it was released on the album Symphony of Sorrowful Songs. Says Stetson: “We all have those moments when we experience a piece of music that transforms us, and this was one of those moments for me. Over the years, I went on to listen to this record countless times, always determined to absorb every instance of it, to know it throughout and fully. And this dedication to a thorough knowledge of the piece eventually gave way to a need to perform it.”

Greg Fox: Sorrow @ Bimhuis Amsterdam

Colin Stetson, renowned for his breathtaking, inventive solo playing on bass saxophone, reinterprets Gorecki’s third symphony. He previously collaborated with, among others, Arcade Fire.

Canadian saxophone player Colin Stetson presents his new album Sorrow in a spectacular way, with a ten piece star ensemble. Sorrow is a reinterpretation of the famous Third symphony by Polish composer Henryk Gorecki, according to Stetson ‘one of the most inspiring symphonies ever’. His reinterpretation is ‘an addition to an already brilliant piece’ and stays close to the original. The Third symphony (1976) is one of the masterpieces of the 20th century. The ensemble features, among others, Sarah Neufeld (Arcade Fire, Bell Orchestre), Greg Fox (Ben Frost) and Shahzad Ismaily (Marc Ribot, Ben Frost).

Colin Stetson is a singular voice on bass saxophone, because of his inventive us of extended techniques such as circular breathing. In his breathtaking solo playing he uses the sax both as a melody and a percussion instrument, hammering the valves. Stetson has collaborated with major artists including Tom Waits and David Byrne, and regularly performs with Arcade Fire and Bon Iver.

The Bimhuis restaurant is open prior to the concert from 6.30 (reservations via 020-7882158).

Drummer polymath Greg Fox kicks off Moogfest’s durational series. His drumming performance is accompanied by immersive live visuals, presented by Undervolt & Co. Whether behind a conventional kit or a hybridized electro-acoustic drum setup, Fox’s swarming blast beats and hypnotic polyrhythms ride the cutting-edge. Exploring rhythm’s preverbal language through pure musical athleticism, Fox stretches the possibilities of drumming in the information age.

Greg Fox

Greg Fox is among many other things a drummer from New York City. Born in 1985, he has studied under Thurman Barker (Anthony Braxton, Cecil Taylor), Marvin “Bugalu” Smith (Sun Ra, Archie Shepp), and Guy Licata (Bill Laswell, Dr. Israel, Apsci), and currently is a sometimes-student of the legendary Milford Graves. Working as a solo artist and in collaboration with many various musicians and projects over the past ten years (among them Liturgy, Guardian Alien, PC Worship, Ben Frost, Colin Stetson, Dan Deacon, and Teeth Mountain), Fox’s drumming conveys raw, concussive energy, reminiscent of Bonham or Moon in their heyday, while his avant-garde instinct communicates complexity and fluidity. Fox’s eclectic discography (over 40 records at the time of this being written) is probably due to the duality of his nature. He demeanor is both relaxed and intense. His playing is calculated, yet free-form. In short, Fox is an enigma—a force of percussive nature.
