GDFX: Jimmy’s Thrift of New Davonhaime

This fall at Knockdown Center, artist Azikiwe Mohammed stages a performative installation of his fictional thrift store, Jimmy’s Thrift of New Davonhaime. New Davonhaime – a location conceived by Mohammed – is an amalgamation of the names of the five most densely populated Black cities in America: New Orleans, Detroit, Jackson, Birmingham, and Savannah. Jimmy’s Thrift of New Davonhaime was created to serve as a safe space for Black and Brown people living in America. Knockdown Center’s galleries will be fully transformed into a thrift store that contains objects both created and found by Mohammed including tapestries, records, postcards, paintings, lamps, and books.

Mohammed will be on site daily performing as the thrift store owner, Jimmy, accepting donations from the public in the form of photographs to be added to Mohammed’s Black Community Family Albums, or audio-recorded memories that detail the first time participants realized they were Black. These recordings, called My First Time stories, will be compiled and turned into 12” records that are then added to the installation’s growing collection. Both living archives offer an intimate and nuanced portrait of Black lives both contemporary and past.

Jimmy’s Thrift of New Davonhaime also contains a music library that invites visitors to exchange music using Mohammed’s custom New Davonhaime flash drives with an emphasis on visitors dropping off their original compositions to be shared with other visitors.

Previous versions of Jimmy’s Thrift of New Davonhaimehave shown at Spring/Break and No Longer Empty in 2016, and Knockdown Center’s culminating presentation of Jimmy’s Thrift of New Davonhaime will be its most extensive iteration yet.

Azikiwe Mohammed graduated from Bard College in 2005 where he studied photography and fine arts. Since then he has shown these things in galleries both nationally and internationally. In 2015 he received the Art Matters Grant, and in 2016 was the recipient of the Rema Hort Mann Emmerging Artist Grant. He lives in New York and currently works at Mana Fine Arts as part of their mana BSMT program.

Guardian Alien @ Donau Festival in Austria

A formation with alternating members, Guardian Alien materialises at donaufestival as a duo. Band founder and phenomenal drummer Greg Fox (Liturgy, Zs) and electronica and guitar commissary Alexandra Drewchin (Eartheater) merge into a freecore nucleus. Guardian Alien smelts trance elements, Kraut diddle-daddle, and cosmic noises into tribal hell rides with a tick for improvisation. With his customary precision, Fox releases a steaming rataplan of drums, which is shaped by the echoes of Drewchin’s minnesong voice.

GDFX: Kiezsalon w/ Stella Chiweshe & Greg Fox in Berlin

Her Majesty – The Queen of Mbira music from Zimbabwe – as Stella Rambisai Chiweshe is affectionately called, is the first female artist to have gained in prestige and to have been honoured with recognition in a music tradition largely dominated by men: Mbira music – known as the backbone of Zimbabwean music. The mbira consists of 22 to 28 metal keys mounted on a hardwood soundboard, and is usually placed inside a gourd resonator (deze). The keys are played with the two thumbs plucking down and the right forefinger plucking up.

She is one of the few musicians in Zimbabwe and Southern Africa, who has, for more than 40 years, been working in the role of traditional Mbira musician. She is a well respected and important woman in the music business too, where bands perform at festivals, in theatres, churches, schools, community halls as well as in family homes for their ancestors. She has set an example for the rest of the women musicians in Zimbabwe. She’s a successful professional artist, both in the entertainment industry and in the international music circuit. In Zimbabwe she’s released more than 20 singles of Mbira music of which her first single Kasahwa went gold in 1975.

After Independence, she was invited to become a member of the original National Dance Company of Zimbabwe, where she soon took the part of a leading Mbira Solo player, dancer and actress. Her work will always be remembered. Her solo work has established herself as one of the most original artists in the contemporary African scene using mbira music to show the depth and power of her traditional spiritual music at home and abroad. Chiweshe’s experience has stimulated her to introduce Mbira music to the occidental context without loosing the relation to her Zimbabwean tradition. Since then, she has won several awards in her country. In 2003 the University of Zimbabwe honoured her with the Masters Degree in Arts.

Greg Fox is a New York City born-and bred drummer, multidisciplinary artist, and teacher. He has played on and released about 50 records since 2008, including his work with Liturgy, ZS, Ben Frost, Colin Stetson, Skeletons, Hieroglyphic Being, Man Forever, and others, as well as with his own solo work and his projects GDFX and Guardian Alien.

“Good drummers aren’t uncommon. Great ones are. We still mourn Keith Moon of the Who and John Bonham of Led Zeppelin as the jolly bashers of modernity. Here comes the future, they seemed to be telling us with their sensational ka-blammo. Together, they popularized the notion that, in rock-and-roll, a drummer’s unsolemn duty is to establish a sense of time while happily smashing it to bits. Greg Fox reactivates that idea for the Information Age.” – Chris Richards, Washington Post

Fox has toured worldwide with various groups and collaborations, held residencies at The Clocktower NYC and Pioneer Works, and was awarded “Best Drummer in NYC” by the Village Voice in 2011. Having spent most of 2016 at home in New York, he is currently working on new collaborations and compositions, teaching individual and group drum lessons, and exploring new territory as a solo artist, using a hybridized electroacoustic drum setup to explore new dimensions through the traditional gestures of the modern drummer and the possibilities inherent in electronic and computer music.

Greg Fox Solo : Pharmakon + Piquet + Barst in Brussels

Pharmakon + Greg Fox (Liturgy) + Piquet + Barst

Mini-festival full of frightening electro-noise and gruesome sounds!

◊ Pharmakon
◊ Greg Fox
◊ Piquet
◊ BARST

Must see!

Greg Fox

Greg Fox Solo with Howie Reeve in Glasgow

This promises to be one of our most inspiring evenings to date…

GREG FOX
Guardian Alien drummer, Liturgy man and prolific collaborator hits Bloc for the first time. One of the most in demand drummers, his talent is immeasurable.

HOWIE REEVE
“As inventive and playful as it is richly emotional…his approach to bass is beautifully expressive, melodic and thoughtful, but also takes in flamenco-style flourishes, charging post-punk grooves, choppy, percussive passages and one surprisingly violent bout of chaos.” (Matt Evans, The List)

Greg Fox: Durational Performance @ Moogfest

Drummer polymath Greg Fox kicks off Moogfest’s durational series. His drumming performance is accompanied by immersive live visuals, presented by Undervolt & Co. Whether behind a conventional kit or a hybridized electro-acoustic drum setup, Fox’s swarming blast beats and hypnotic polyrhythms ride the cutting-edge. Exploring rhythm’s preverbal language through pure musical athleticism, Fox stretches the possibilities of drumming in the information age.
Visuals by Andrew Benson.

Greg Fox

Greg Fox is among many other things a drummer from New York City. Born in 1985, he has studied under Thurman Barker (Anthony Braxton, Cecil Taylor), Marvin “Bugalu” Smith (Sun Ra, Archie Shepp), and Guy Licata (Bill Laswell, Dr. Israel, Apsci), and currently is a sometimes-student of the legendary Milford Graves. Working as a solo artist and in collaboration with many various musicians and projects over the past ten years (among them Liturgy, Guardian Alien, PC Worship, Ben Frost, Colin Stetson, Dan Deacon, and Teeth Mountain), Fox’s drumming conveys raw, concussive energy, reminiscent of Bonham or Moon in their heyday, while his avant-garde instinct communicates complexity and fluidity. Fox’s eclectic discography (over 40 records at the time of this being written) is probably due to the duality of his nature. He demeanor is both relaxed and intense. His playing is calculated, yet free-form. In short, Fox is an enigma—a force of percussive nature.
